How Often To Change Motorcycle Oil

New Springfield motorcycle owners may be familiar with car oil change schedules, but not so familiar with their new bike’s recommended schedule. If you’re wondering how often to change your motorcycle oil, it’s always best practice to check your owner’s manual first. Depending on the type of oil your engine takes, the range can be as low as 2,000 miles and as high as 10,000. To help you figure out when to get your motorcycle’s oil changed, the experts at Trak Powersports’ service center have put together this guide.

Why Motorcycle Oil Changes Are Important

First, it’s always good to know why a motorcycle oil change is important. Oil is made to keep your engine running smoothly, keeping all the moving parts lubricated and the internal components clean. Each time you rev up your bike, the oil moves through the engine to clean up dirt and debris and absorb the heat in the combustion chamber. As you put your motorcycle’s engine to the test, the oil regulates the engine’s internal temperature and keeps it running at its optimum, safe performance level.

Motorcycle Oil Change Intervals

How often to change your motorcycle mostly depends on the type of oil you use and how often you use your bike. Mineral-based, semi-synthetic, and synthetic oils are the most common, and all have differing intervals. Not sure which one you’re using? Check your owner’s manual for their oil recommendations and then schedule an appointment with our service team to see where your oil levels are at. We’ll be sure to get you on a routine service schedule that’ll keep your bike ready for whatever the Creswell road throws at it.

If you do know what oil you’re using, here are some recommended motorcycle oil change intervals:

  • Mineral-Based: Every 2,000 miles
  • Semi-Synthetic: Every 5,000 to 6,000 miles
  • Full Synthetic: Every 7,000 to 10,000 miles

Motorcycle oil change intervals can also depend on use. If you only take your bike out a few times a year, it’s hard to rack up over 2,000 miles for the minimum change time. For light use, it’s instead recommended to schedule an oil change twice a year, even if your bike is in winter storage. If you use your bike daily, though, you may need an oil change before the recommended mileage benchmarks. Let’s take a look at some signs your motorcycle may need an oil change before the recommended mileage interval.

Signs Your Bike Needs Oil Service

If your bike shows any of the following symptoms, even if you haven’t hit your mileage benchmark yet, make an appointment with Trak Powersports for an oil change as soon as possible:

  • The engine is louder than usual.
  • Warning lights on your dash don’t disappear.
  • You can’t remember the last time you changed your motorcycle’s oil.
